Roof Repair Checklist for Spring

Winters in Virginia can be brutal on a roof. Early spring is the perfect opportunity to do roofing maintenance and repairs, as it’s after the harsh winter but before the rainiest season of the year gets fully underway. Let’s talk about some items you’ll want to add to your roof repair checklist in time for spring.

Ask for Help From a Trusted Individual

Never inspect your roof without having a trusted individual there with you to hold the ladder. If you fall and no one is around to help, the situation can go from bad to even worse.

Know Your Limitations

If you’re not in good health and physical condition, it’s better not to take the risk of inspecting your roof, even with someone there with you. For example, if you have a broken foot or you’re on medication that could make you feel dizzy, you may think it will be fine to make your way up the ladder, but you could easily take a tumble. Be realistic about your limitations before stepping foot on the ladder.

Have Your Trusted Person Make a List

Ask your trusted person down on the ground to make a list of roofing problems as you go about your inspection. For instance, do you spot bent shingles? Are there some that are missing?

Delegating the task to the other person means you can focus on staying safe while inspecting the roof instead of worrying about making notes or trying to remember everything.

Use this inspection time to determine what needs to be done and note the relevance of each repair task rather than doing any repairs. It will allow you to get the supplies you need, schedule enough time for each task, and consult with a professional before moving forward.

Check the Condition of the Gutters

Check the condition of your gutters while you’re inspecting the roof. Are they tightly attached to the home? Do you see holes from rust? Take note of any problematic areas.

Remove Foliage

Look for foliage that shouldn’t be in, on, or near the roof and gutters. For instance, check if any branches are hanging dangerously close to your roof, evaluate if the gutters are clogged, and see if there are piles of debris stuck in the shingles.

Remove as much of the foliage as you can. Yes, this strays from the previous advice about leaving the roof tasks to a later date, but leaves make a great cover over the damage you won’t be able to spot unless you clear them away.

Take Photographs

Take pictures while you’re inspecting the roof. Later on, use your phone to zoom in to get a closer look at what you photographed rather than having to physically get closer. It will also allow you to have images to show the professionals.

Call a Roofing Professional in Virginia

Homeowners may have the skills and desire to do certain spring roof duties, such as cleaning away the foliage, but most tasks will likely require a professional. Schedule an appointment so you can grab a spot before your preferred ones are taken.

Don’t wait to do your spring roofing inspection in Virginia. Call a roofing expert as soon as possible so the repairs are done before any severe inclement weather strikes.
